VETERINARY EDUCATION IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR

FVSc & AH (SKUAST-K)

Veterinary Faculties

The state of Jammu and Kashmir boasts of two universities with full fledged Faculties of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (FVSc & AH), the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir with its FVSc & AH at Shuhama, Srinagar and the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu with its FVSc & AH at R. S. Pura, Jammu. Both faculties offer facilities for undergraduate as well as graduate studies. Undergraduate students undergo nine semesters of course work and six months of rotatory internship to receive the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry (BVSc & AH) Graduate students are awarded the degrees of Master of Veterinary sciences after completion of 36 credit hours of coursework and 28 credit hours of thesis work over a span of minimum two years and a maximum of four years. Graduate studies are available in a number of veterinary and animal sciences disciplines. The regulatory authority for these degree courses is the Veterinary Council of India. This body regulates the curriculum and evaluatory processes. Annually around 50-60 graduates pass out from these faculties. The postgraduate output is not encouraging due to excellent career/employment opportunities for graduates and lack of scholarship and monetary support by the universities for graduates.
